Getting A Handle On Email

By Eartha | July 8, 2008

I started rereading The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Tim Ferriss because I needed to be reminded about organizing my inbox - plus it is a really good book and Tim’s blog is also full of great information.

I receive tons of email every day. Not in the thousands like some busy people but enough to cause chaos if not managed properly. I was working with 2 email addresses but for the same purposes. I finally combined them to filter to my Gmail account and work off of one account. I also created folders to immediately move messages to and I keep my inbox clean.

I think seeing my inbox empty relieves a lot of stress because I don’t feel overloaded when I sit down to work. I then prioritize the contents of each folder for what is going to be done for the day. Of course this doesn’t always work out because other issues tend to come up and stuff on my to-do list gets pushed back. Getting a handle on your email can do wonders. Unfortunately I am not able to outsource my inbox 100% the way Tim Ferriss does but I have taken his advice to avoid checking it first thing in the morning and late in the evenings.
